'Inner Child'

This is a small study titled 'Inner Child' from my independent experimentation with surrealist art. The piece depicts two apparitions that are morphing into each other, which I intended to be viewed as an individual tied to their inner child throughout adulthood. I used oil paint for the background and white acrylic paint for the figures, as well as permanent marker to highlight some details. I loved experimenting with this and am happy with the result; I would also enjoy pursuing this style further on this course.

'Restraint'

Oil painting - Size indicated This is a continuation of my Saville project titled 'Restraint'; this is my interpretation of Saville's messages and style, incorporating the themes of manipulation and distortion.

'Hyphen' study and analysis

Oil painting A1 size This is an A1 oil study of Jenny Saville's portrait 'Hyphen' completed as part of a Saville exploration in my A-Level studies. Included below is a picture of my working progress and my analysis of Saville's piece in order to understand her work more deeply. From my research, I have discovered that Jenny Saville is a painter known for her contemporary oil paintings of emotive large scale head paintings and unidealised depictions of the female form. I have learnt that her painting style is unique; she uses a mix of abstract and classic styles to create an impactful depiction of emotion. She also uses striking colours and loves to use heavy layers of paint which she scrapes across the canvas to add texture. The painting that I have recreat

Life drawing

This is an A2 life drawing of my friend that I completed in graphite. From this, I learnt more about proportional skills and how to feel more comfortable with a live reference.

'Lola'

These are sketches of a character I created called Lola. I completed the development page above in biro and graphite and the study below in biro. I worked with the idea of accentuating eye bags and I love the result.

'Guilt'

This is an independent self portrait titled 'Guilt', completed in oil paint. From the idea of distorted emotion that I am exploring in my A-Level project, I wanted to experiment with a personal piece about the guilt that comes with living with mental illness, told subtly by the raw expression illustrated. I enjoyed creating this piece independently and I like the abstract elements in the result.

Landscape studies

These are experimental graphite landscape pieces that I completed independently. The illustration above was created from a reference of my own photography and the one below is from a photo I found on the internet and felt inspired by.
